If you have been wearing your braces for some time and the orthodontist is pleased with your progress, they will want to plan for removal. Continue reading to learn about what to expect at your braces removal appointment.
What Happens When It’s Time to Take My Braces Off?
At the end of your braces treatment, when the goals of the treatment plan have been achieved, your orthodontist will schedule an appointment for removal. The removal appointment will be approximately an hour long.
To remove the braces, the orthodontist will first use a special tool to smoothly remove the molar brackets. The next step is to use a set of special clinical pliers to remove the brackets from your teeth. No worries; this process is not painful.
After the brackets are removed, there will be some residual bonding material left on your teeth. We’ll gently scrape it off. We’ll polish your teeth to ensure that all of the material – as well as any plaque that may have built up around the brackets and bands – is removed.

Once the teeth no longer have bonding material on them, your teeth will feel quite smooth and slippery. This is normal; your mouth has grown used to having the brackets and wire over your teeth and now that they are no longer there, it will take a little bit of time to get used to the feeling. Most people can’t stop themselves from running their tongue over their teeth for the first few days!
What Happens Next?
At this point, the orthodontist will assess your newly-aligned teeth and will discuss the type of retainers you will need to wear in order to preserve your beautiful new smile. The expectations and requirements of retainer wearing will be discussed with you at length.
Just like the appointments you attended while wearing your braces, the appointments after you have them taken off are important. The orthodontist will want to monitor how well your teeth are holding in their new position. He will ensure that the retainers remain in good condition.
After you get your braces off, your oral hygiene will still continue to be essential, as well. It may be tempting to eat all of the sticky or hard foods that you couldn’t eat while you had braces. You should still exercise caution, as you may have some tooth or gum sensitivity.
Continuing good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly will still be imperative to maintain healthy teeth.
Most importantly, enjoy your new smile!
