Few orthodontic treatments offer the freedom and convenience that Invisalign does. The ability to remove your aligners when eating and brushing, for special occasions, or for contact sports is something that patients strongly value.
It’s the unfortunate truth that these benefits can potentially become a problem when patients don’t wear their aligners as directed. You may be wondering…what happens then?
How Does Invisalign Work?
At CaliSmile Orthodontics, we work with you to make sure you thoroughly understand your treatment plan. Part of this is understanding the importance of wearing your Invisalign trays. No worries, we will review how long you will need to wear them, as well as what the overall treatment goals are.
Invisalign is a minimally invasive method of treating misaligned teeth. Over the course of treatment, you will be asked to wear a set of custom-made aligner trays for a prescribed length of time before moving on to the next, which will focus on aligning a different area of the mouth.
Recommended Practices
When we meet with you to go over your treatment plan, we will discuss some recommended practices, such as:
- Only drink water with aligners in place.
- Take the aligners out before eating or drinking.
- Clean the aligners (and your teeth) before placing them back inside your mouth.
- Change aligners every two weeks, or as your orthodontist directs.
The idea behind Invisalign is simple: properly wearing the aligners applies gentle pressure to the teeth, and will slowly guide them into their desired positions.

Help! I Forgot to Wear My Invisalign!
Since Invisalign allows you to take your trays out for various reasons, it can become a habit to be without them.
If you don’t wear them for an extended period of time – more than a few days – please contact your orthodontist. You could potentially experience a relapse in tooth alignment, and your tray may not fit over your teeth. Your orthodontist will recommend the best course of action, which could be simply to go back to an earlier set of trays; a “reset” of sorts. You may need to get a whole new set of trays in some cases.
The Best Way To Prevent a Relapse in Alignment
The best way to prevent alignment relapse is to wear your aligners as directed by your orthodontist. Invisalign’s goal is to give you a beautiful and healthy smile; your treatment plan is specially designed to help you achieve this goal.
Invisalign recommends that Invisalign aligners be worn 22 hours a day.. Regular visits to your orthodontist are important to monitor the progress and change the treatment plan if necessary.
The orthodontist will be able to identify if there has been a period of time when you did not wear the aligners enough to make the desired changes. They will discuss any difficulties with you and may adjust the treatment plan as needed.
